2017 Board of Directors
Susan Pratt retired this past June, after 24 years of teaching elementary and middle school language arts, science and theatre. She has a B. A. in Liberal Arts from Austin College (Sherman, TX) and a Master's degree in the Art of Teaching form the University of Puget Sound (Tacoma, WA).
She has volunteered with Girl Scouts, Destination Imagination, and the Breast Cancer Resource Center among other organizations. This is her 19th year working on haunts. She loves seeing the creative team start with a blank slate and watching everything develop and come together by the end of October. She joined SCARE for a CURE in 2007 and currently serves as President.
Debra BuffingtonVice President
Debra Buffington is the Library Technology Coordinator for Austin Independent School District and has served in the field of education/library for over 25 years.
She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education with a dual major in Dance and History at Southwest Texas State University and a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from the University of Texas at Austin.
Her favorite holiday is Halloween, where she enjoyed decorating her yard and dressing up to scare the neighbors. As a fan of Britannia Manor and Haunted Trails, she found others who shared her passion and joined the Scare for a Cure family in 2008. Her first job at scare was fabricating stone castle walls out of styrofoam. She has worked every haunt event since 2008 and continues to scare guests, tech special effects or work behind the scenes. Her favorite skill to teach, blooding a room or body parts for a specific room in the haunt.
Other organizations she volunteers for are Breast Cancer Resource Center, several dog rescue groups and 10,000 Villages (a free trade store).
Currently serving on the Board of Directors as Vice President.
Jarrett CrippenBuild Director
Austin native Jarrett Crippen has been with the Austin Police Dept. for 25 years and has served as a criminal investigator for the last 17 yrs.
Jarrett has completed numerous courses and seminars on leadership and communication skills including the West Point Leadership Academy and Say It Loud, a public speaking certification seminar and several voice acting workshops.
Jarrett co-founded SCARE for a CURE, a non-profit that hosts an annual haunted house that has raised more than $200,000 for breast cancer-related charities. In 2007, Jarrett was selected to be a cast member of Stan Lee’s Who Wants to be a Superhero?, a Sci-Fi Channel reality show. Jarrett won the contest and was proclaimed the world’s next great superhero! As part of winning the show, Darkhorse Comics released The Defuser, Issue #1 and Jarrett starred with Kevin Sorbo in the Syfy movie Lightning Strikes. His passions include public speaking and storytelling. He is always looking for ways to educate children about how to be a hero in their own community as well as raise money for worthy causes.
Alexander Petak is a Staff Attorney for the Public Utility Commission of Texas. Alex graduated from UT, and, being unable to move on with his life, continued his education and received a UT law degree.
Alex has been a volunteer for Scare since 2011, when he had entirely too much fun being a slime clown and crawling after guests. In his free time he enjoys being a part of best worst softball team in Austin, playing chess while not contributing to his pub trivia team, and dreaming about returning to the racquetball courts.
Brooke GarrettVolunteer Director
Brooke Garrett currently co-owns a costuming business, “Raven’s Clawset”, with a fellow SCARE volunteer as well as dabbles in other side ventures. She likes to dedicate most of her time to volunteering and traveling. She started volunteering with SCARE for a CURE in 2012 and has been the Volunteer Director from 2013 until current, 2017.
She started volunteering in high school and has made volunteering a part of her everyday life ever since. In addition to SCARE she also volunteers with the Breast Cancer Resource Center as the Volunteer Chair for ArtBra for the past two years and Wilco Blue Star Mothers serving the local Veterans and Active Military.
Brooke is excited to get continue to grow the Volunteer pool of SCARE volunteers and get to know the new volunteers out at build as the Job Board Queen while working with them to produce another AMAZING show in the pursuit to raise money for the fight against Breast Cancer and other local Manor charities.
Suzie HawleyOperations Director
Suzie Hawley is a manicurist at Michael's Hair Company in Northwest Austin, where she specializes in manicures and spa pedicures. She's worked in the salon industry for over 15 yrs and enjoys helping her clients look and feel better. She was also the Office/Student Services Manager & Network Admin at a local IT technology & health careers trade school, and has had various other IT-related jobs over the last 24 years.
Suzie has completed an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Computer Information Technology, Local Area Network Systems Administration, with a specialization in Security Administration, and was inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. She loves learning and hopes to continue her education in the future.
Suzie's passions include her family, outdoor activities (camping, canoeing, hiking, etc,) and spending time with her friends and family at Scare.
Suzie joined Scare for a Cure in 2012, the year of Summer Camp Massacre. She has worked at Scare as an assistant manager for FX, Props, and the Art Dept, and currently serves on the Board of Directors as Operations Manager. She loves being a part of the Scare family, and is thankful for the opportunities that Scare gives her to support the Breast Cancer Resource Centers of Texas and give back to the local community.
